  • Feb 18, 2020

The issue with printing on a dark color T-shirt can be overcome by applying a white underbase before you print an artwork on a polyester T-shirt. A coat of white underbase on a polyester T-shirt will make sure that the ink of the print will not react to the dye of the fabric of the T-shirt no matter what printing method you are using.

So whether you want to print a one-liner, logo or add new colors to the embroidered patches on your polyester T-shirt, you can do it by using a coat of white underbase.

Polyester is always a tricky fabric to print an artwork. However, there are solutions that professional printers use in their printing process to create high-quality prints on a polyester fabric. Printing on a dark polyester T-shirt is not an exception as it is an equally challenging task for the professional printers to create high quality prints. However, it is possible to produce vibrant prints on a dark polyester T-shirt with help of some tricks.

But printing on a polyester T-shirt is not that simple and you have to first understand the dynamics of dealing with a polyester fabric when using different printing methods.

Printing on a dark T-shirt can be a bit challenging since the dye of the fabric can mix with the ink of the print and it can change its color. Printing on a polyester T-shirt becomes even more challenging since this fabric works best only with dye sublimation printing method and no other printing methods can produce better print on a polyester T-shirt.

For example, if you use DTG printing method to print on a polyester T-shirt, it can result in dye migration in the curing process if you don’t use a low-cure ink for printing. The same goes with screen printing. Though they both can produce a print on polyester, it can cost you more than what you pay in dye sublimation, especially when you are printing on a dark polyester T-shirt.

However, there are blended T-shirts which has polyester content and can be used with printing methods other than dye sublimation but they cannot always produce the desired print effect and the result is often a vintage print.

For example, a Tri Blend Polyester T-shirt has 50% of polyester content. So if you print it with DTG or screen printing method, the colors will get toned down due to the presence of cotton and rayon in the tee. To counter this effect, you should increase the brightness of colors so that it results in a more vibrant print.

Therefore, if you want to get the best results for printing a polyester T-shirt, then dye sublimation printing method is the safest bet. It is the best printing method for printing on a polyester T-shirt.
